Why the material choice matters more than you think
The material you choose decides how your product feels, how long it lasts, how it is manufactured, and even which markets it can be sold in. For swim goggles, tableware, baby toys, and industrial seals, switching materials can change the entire supply chain. This guide compares silicone, TPE, and rubber so you can brief your factory with confidence.
Silicone: the premium all-rounder
Silicone stands out for its food-grade safety, wide temperature tolerance from about -40°C to 230°C, and excellent chemical stability. It does not contain BPA or phthalates, resists aging and UV light, and remains flexible in cold water. The main trade-off is cost: silicone raw material and tooling are more expensive than TPE. For baby products, kitchenware, diving masks, and sealing rings, silicone is usually the safest recommendation.
TPE: the budget-friendly alternative
Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is softer, cheaper, and can be injection-molded in very fast cycles, which lowers unit cost at scale. However, TPE has a narrower temperature range, can absorb odors, and is generally less durable than silicone for long-term use. It is a good choice for low-cost consumer items where regulatory pressure is low, but it rarely passes strict food-contact or medical tests as easily as silicone.
Rubber: strength where silicone cannot go
Natural rubber and EPDM rubber offer outstanding tear strength, abrasion resistance, and low cost for industrial parts such as gaskets, O-rings, and vibration dampers. But rubber can degrade under UV and ozone exposure, and it may cause allergic reactions in skin-contact products. For heavy-duty industrial sealing, rubber often wins; for consumer goods near food or skin, silicone is preferred.
A quick decision framework for buyers
Ask three questions before you choose. First, what standards must the product pass, such as FDA or LFGB? Second, what environment will it face, including temperature, chemicals, and sunlight? Third, what is your target price point? Write down the answers, share them with your factory, and request material samples with test reports so you can compare feel and performance side by side.
